  1. Announcing NetPager
  2.  
  3. NetPager is an application designed to link your Novell network in various
  4. ways to pocket beepers (or pagers).  In short, NetPager can perform the
  5. following functions:
  6.  
  7. - Link Email to pagers
  8. - "Broadcast Page" which means you can configure NetPager to transmit
  9.   any received broadcast messages to a number of pagers.  This includes
  10.   messages generated by the system "Volume SYS: almost out of disk space",
  11.   "Mirror partition 0 has failed" etc...
  12. - Monitor the network connection and if it fails, send an appropriate
  13.   message to a number of pagers "Network connection lost, system crashed?"
  14. - Accounting of all pages sent
  15.  
  16. Linking to EMAIL
  17. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  18. By using NetPager, all users on your network that have access to any MHS
  19. compatible email application can send email to a pager.  Numeric pagers
  20. require the message to be only numeric, alpha pagers can display the
  21. actual message.  There is no charge for a message service since it would no
  22. longer be needed.

  24. NetPager also has built-in support for Pegasus Mail which, if used, would
  25. eliminate the requirement to have MHS.
  26.  
  27. Finally, NetPager supports the Charon gateway giving pager email access to
  28. users of Unix hosts or other SMTP systems.

  30. Broadcast Paging
  31. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  32. NetPager can be configured to transmit any broadcast messages received.  It
  33. can also be set to ignore broadcast messages that contain special text
  34. such as the word "MAIL" as in the case of "You have new mail".  This can
  35. be utilized to monitor system errors and warnings and help head-off
  36. potential problems due to disk crashes and space allocations etc....  With
  37. this feature, you can also send pages from the command line using Novell's
  38. SEND command.

  40. How about being informed at home that backup is completed or requires a new
  41. tape?  Many backup systems send a broadcast message to this effect to tape
  42. operators.  With Backup Paging, you can have these messages sent to you
  43. without having to wait in the office.

  45. Network Monitoring
  46. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  47. NetPager automatically monitors supported servers.  If the connection to
  48. a server fails (indicative of a system crash), NetPager can send an
  49. appropriate message to a number of pages.

  51. By using NetPager, the monitoring various network conditions are only
  52. limited to the imagination of the administrator.  You can write batch
  53. files that can detect problems such as printer errors, power failures,
  54. security problems etc... and simply send NetPager the appropriate message
  55. to have sent to the appropriate pagers.

  57. Requirements
  58. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  59. - Currently, NetPager requires a dedicated PC of any type (4MHZ should
  60. work fine).  This is to eliminate any delays incurred in the MHS cycle
  61. of MHS gateways.

  63. - A modem is also needed to transmit the pages to your paging company's
  64. system or to dial the phone for numeric pagers.  A 300 baud modem is
  65. usually sufficient.

  67. - MHS (version 1.5) is only required for email access if you do not use
  68.   Pegasus Mail

  70. Availability

  72. A development version of NetPager can be obtained today by contacting
  73. Affirmative Computer Systems directly.  Official release of NetPager
  74. is expected by April 15th, 1993 and its shareware version should be
  75. posted to CompuServe.

  79. NetPager is priced at $149 per supported server.  This is valid for
  80. any number of pagers.
